Living A Lie Isn’t
Easy
In 1997, on a visit back
to Minnesota from Connecticut, about a year after John Peterson and Brad
Whipps had prayed for me, Brad wondered why nobody had ever written a song
about wearing a mask. I told him I would get right on it. On
the way back to Bev’s parents (Bev is my wife), the song started coming.
Bev wrote down the words on an envelope in the cubby hole.
Although the word
hypocrite is not used in the song, the song is about hypocrisy and it’s
dangers. Jesus said, my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
The great line in the song is: “It’s a difficult task to keep wearing a
mask.”
The word hypocrite in
the Greek means to put on the face. Actors in Jesus day would put on
a face held by a stick. This represented the character they played.
Jesus used it to describe the Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious
rulers. Living a lie isn’t easy because no one can play at
Christianity. You can’t say one thing while doing another.
